COMMUNITY

MHANY isn’t just in the business of bringing buildings to neighborhoods, we also strive to become a part of existing communities by helping to reinforce a sense of trust, safety and belonging. Community is both a feeling and a set of relationships. One of the things that has been a part of the fabric of MHANY since the beginning is our commitment to building communities, not just housing. We do that in many ways, including by connecting our residents to a wide array of resources, most recently around the pandemic, providing financial counseling, and connecting residents to organizing efforts that affect them and their neighbors.

Composting

As part of our commitment to sustainability, MHANY has installed state-of-the-art anaerobic biodigesters at two of our newest developments: Chestnut Commons in Brooklyn and The Peninsula in the Bronx. Residents, both in residential and commercial spaces, are encouraged to separate organic waste from their recycling and trash. This will significantly help to reduce waste! Organic materials include food scraps, yard waste, and food-soiled paper, all of which can be added to the biodigester to generate nutrient-rich fertilizer. This fertilizer is then channeled back into the local community, enriching gardens and supporting local growers. In time, we hope to make the biodigester available to the community residents and businesses.
